The petitions the Roma deported to Transnistria addressed to the Romanian occupation authorities in this Soviet territory between 1942 and 1944 constitute an interesting historical phenomenon. Through them, the Roma made their grievances and demands known, while also describing the injustices they sufered during their deportation. These documents show in detail what was happening in villages, gypsy camps, kolkhozes and other deportation sites. This article discusses some aspects of the deportation as they appear in the Roma petitions: the harsch living conditions, the work carried out by the Roma, the sometimes difficult relations that existed between the deported Roma and the local Ukrainian population, etc.
