On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 17:00 (18:00 Romanian time), the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies (Austrian Academy of Sciences) in collaboration with the "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History (Romanian Academy) would like to invite you to the workshop "New Histories of Romania during the Cold War".

 

The event explores new approaches in the Romanian historiography of the communist regime. The insights about the Romanian case will be situated in the broader context of histories of state socialism and Cold War in Southeastern Europe.

 

The workshop comprises two panels:

Daily Life and Memory (speakers: Mioara Anton and Claudia-Florentina Dobre; discussant: Oliver Jens Schmitt)

Institutions and Biographies (speakers: Cristian Vasile and Cosmin Popa; discussant: Constantin Iordachi)

 

The workshop will also be an occasion to present recent volumes pertaining to the history of the communist regime published by the Romanian speakers or by the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History.

 

This event takes place in the context of the research project “Foreign policy thinking in communist Albania and Romania, Grant-DOI: 10.55776/PAT6757023” funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
